Most likely you have the 9.1 update which can only update OS 9.0. You will need a full version in order to install. In my opinion if you are going to stay with the classic OS you would be better off upgrading to 8.6 and staying there. I always found it to be more stable than OS 9.

If I where you I would ditch the classic OS all together and pick up a cheap copy of Panther 10.3. It will run decently on your machine if you up the RAM to 512MB.

As for the firmware update I don't recall you model iMac needing a firmware update.

Yep, I ran Panther off a 333 G3 powerbook, and it was just fine for me. A little laggy if I ran too much at one time, but other than that it was just fine. I had the RAM maxed at 384. You'd also likely want a bigger hard drive. OS X itself will suck half that 6 gig away.

Just do a custom install and the installation can be taken down to about 1GB.

I agree. I've got a 366Mhz Clamshell Indigo that's running OSX 10.3.9. Slow? Yes. Stripping down the OS gives me a great functional portable. But I think a 128mb RAM stock G3 333Mhz is going to need more RAM to be fully functional. My Clamshell has 320MB of RAM (64 on the board, 256 additional) and that's enough for it to work without any hangups. But know the limitations.

OS 10.3.9 absorbs about 3GB of my Clamshell hard drive. A 6GB drive will press you for space.

NOTE: My first Mac was a Performa 5215 CD. I believe the OS was 7.5.1. I was estatic at the time. I followed all the upgrade routes. As stated above by discotronic, I think that OS 8.6 (as a stable system) was a great OS. It turned me on completely to Macs. I've never looked back. If a RAM upgrade for you is not possible, or desirable, then OS 8.6 is the way to go. I still prefer it to OS 9.2.2.

yer, 6gb really sucks. you can pick up an 80gb one for about £40 here in the UK. make sure you go here before you install os x: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117

its the chart for firmware updates.

to check what firmware you have, push a pin into the reset button, then quickly push it in to the programmers button bellow.

hold it until the screen turns white with a command prompt. it should say something like this:

"Apple Firmware XXXXXXX"

please tell us what the number. if it is 3.0 or something, its up to date.
