So I am pretty excited, I just installed my first Optical drive and it seems to be in perfect shape. I used Patchburn and it now integrates with all the iLife products seemlessly. However, I have a quick question about DVD+RW, I'm not exactly sure how it works since this is my first drive as such.

I am running OS X 10.4.2. I understand how to "burn" to the disc, but I'm not sure how to edit a rewriteable (alter the contents, delete previous burns, re-burn)? Can that even be done using finder's integrated burn disc option. Am I just missing something?

CD-RW and DVD-RW are not "editable" after a burn. On Windows, I know some companies have hacked up filesystems that allow for what is essentially a "RAM" function on CD/DVD RW discs. The only way to do that on a Mac in any supported fashion is to use DVD-RAM.

Needless to say, what you have to do is erase a RW disc in the Disk Utility and re-burn the contents. Not handy, but it doesn't modify the way things are stored on the disc in a non-standard way like those Windows programs.

Ok, thanks. That is what I was thinking. You essentially have to erase the entire disc before re-burning to it.
