All iMacs after the original Bondis are USB 1.1 (or USB 2.0 for more recnt ones) - and the Bondis came with an update disk to 'upgrade' them to USB1.1. As I understand it, the original 'USB 1' had some 'bugs' and 1.1. was a sort of 'bug fix' but people still think of 12Mbs USB as 'USB 1'

Does that make sense? (anyone know better - please correct me)

The first iMac to offer USB 2 was the last G4 iMac that was introduced Sept 2003. Anything prior to the 17" 1.25GHz and 15" 1GHz models had USB 1.1.

You can, but you will not get the benifit of the USB higher speed, so if you need high speed data transfer e.g. for real time video or similar it will not function properly.

iPod Shuffle is the only iPod that is 1.1 compliant, the rest require firewire or USB 2.0

Incorrect. The old 30GB color iPod will sync on a USB 1.x bus. My friend has one.

Yes, it is slow as a molasses in January.
