I really hope someone out there can help me. I got an iMac at a garage sale a few days ago. It says Mac OS X version 10.1.5 160MB PowerPC G3. I got it so that my 4 year old could have it to play games on. While trying to install his games I keep getting an error message that says "To satrt Classic, you need Mac OS 9.1 or later installed" Well I believe I do. I don't understand. I do not consider my self computer stupid, but I haven't used an apple since I was a kid an owned an apple II c+ and that was a long time ago. So if anyone can tell me why I have an updated operating system, but not the installing software, or how to upgrade classic with out spending $100+ i'd love it.

Do you have the OS X install disc? Install Classic from it. You can emulate Classic.

Do they have any discs for you? Can you get them?

Go to ebay: Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/APPLE-MAC-OS-9-2...QQcmdZViewItem

You want at least 9.2.2 or you can buy OS X Jaguar and still emulate OS 9.0

It's up to you.

No retail version of OSX was ever sold with Classic on the same disks. I think 10.1 came with OS9 disks. eBay is the best place to get OS9, but with OSX already installed, I think will give you trouble trying to install it. OS9 will say that it cannot install because a newer OS is already installed.

Unless you have another partition to put it on. Otherwise, you have to start over and reinstall OS9, the OSX.

alright I ordered something off of ebay-- I now think it was the wrong thing. I ordered Apple iMac OS 9.2.2 & OS X 10.1.2 Restore Set--LIKE NEW. I tried to put it in and it won't open it. I do not know how to use an apple computer. I am used to my DELL. This is like a foriegn language to me. Can someone please explain to me how to fix my problem, what exactly I need, and how to do it. I need a new operating system I think. Can I erase the one I have and install off of the restore CD's??? or do I need to buy something else??? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will only be able to use the restore CDs on your iMac if it is the same model iMac as the CDs originally came with. A lot of people sell "restore" CDs on ebay asusming anyone can install OS9 or OSX on any machine with them. That is not true. Only the full retail versions can install on any mac.

What kind of iMac is it? What color? Slot loading or tray? DVD or CD-RW? Which iMac restore disk did you buy?
