I have a dual 867 running 10.4.1 and am having problems with the system freezing up when inactive overnight. I have removed screensavers and shut down all programs when I leave for the night and when I return in the mornings, the processors are running at 90-95% capacity and when I try and open a finder window, the whole thing freezes.

I left the Activity Monitor on over night and I got this:

update using 98.80% of my CPU
syslogd using 84.70% of my CPU

Then after that is Activity Monitor using 6.20% and so on, down to .40%

Any ideas as to what changed or what to do? Thanks in advance.

syslogd is (duh!) writing to system logfiles for some reason, and I think update is just flushing those changes back to disc. Have you tried reading the logs to see what it is writing?
