I bought a new PM D2.3 G5 with 2GB RAM built to order. I am in the market for 2 gb more and was wondering if it is ok to mix an alt. brand of memory with the appl BTO RAM. Also if it is ok what is the best brand of RAM to get (fastest and most reliable, etc.) Thank you in advance for your help.

Couple of things: There is no "fastest" G5 RAM because your Mac will run all compatible RAM at exactly the same speed. If any seller is advertising their Mac RAM is faster than any other, run away.

You install RAM in pairs, and as long as is is fully compatible PowerMac G5 RAM, it should play nice with the stock Apple RAM.

How do you know it is compatible? Purchase it from a reputable seller who tests and guarantees compatibility with your model Mac.

Some people like Crucial (if you get their Mac-specific RAM, not their Generic), if you are in the USA I like Data Memory Systems http://www.datamem.com/AMM6.asp

Thanks

As stated above, get PC3200 DDR400 RAM for your G5. I think the CL of Mac BTO RAM is 2.5. You have to get a pair, one for each bank.

Do a search in the forum, and you will find lots of threads concerning this, including opinions and test of which work and which to avoid. You'll find that this RAM is a lot cheaper than the Apple RAM you bought. Apple tends to overprice their RAM. You can get some good deals out there.
