There is no generation number.

Unfortunately, because of Apple's shortsighted naming schemes, when trying to identify a machine you're looking to purchase you actually have to identify physical characteristics like '8 RAM slots'.

You can tell by the model number on the backplate. The original dual 1.8 with the PCI-X / 8 RAM slots is model number: M9393LL/A

You can also get this number from Apple System Profiler, it's in the Hardware Overview section as the "Sales Order Number".

Edit: just checked my Sawtooth G4's backplate, and the exact model number isn't listed. I don't know about the back of a G5, you may have to make them check the number in Apple System Profiler to be sure.

Also, if you can get a serial number, you can enter it here and get some info on the make date, model, etc...

The Apple System Profiler can tell you for sure.
