I have recently bought my first ever Mac....a G5 2.7. As standard it comes with 250 gb hard drive. Since I am going to be using Final Cut Studio I asked them to install a second 250 gb hard drive which I would imagine is the best place to keep the video editing. However, I have not been able to locate or get into the second hard drive to instal Final Cut.
When I start up each time I get a message saying 'Disc not readable....Ignore, Eject etc..'. I have been told the problem may be that the second hard drive has not ben formatted in the shop when installed.
In Disc utility i can see 2 hard drives. one says 232 gb remaining the other says 239 gb remaining (obviously the unused one) so it is there. I am no tech head so im a lil nervous to touch anything in there till i have had some advice on the best way to go about fixing the problem.
Only the one hard drive shows up on my desktop.
Hope someone can give me some advice. Many thanx in advance.

i also use my g5 for video editing, but i got the dual 2.0 model...i have a 160gb drive in bay A and installed a 300gb in bay B. i use the 160 for software, applications, music, pictures, etc while i use the 300gb for all of my video storage (renders, captures, etc.) if possible, i try to keep two copies of the final output video..one on the 160gb drive and another on the 300gb drive, just to be safe in case of a drive malfunction...
in your issue of installing the software on your second 250gb drive...i believe that mac wont allow you to install a program on a non-boot drive...

The problem is indeed that the 2nd HD is not formatted yet. Use Disk Utility to format it. Use the format option for "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Regarding installing applications, most applications can be literally anywhere, including on a non-boot drive. There are only a few poorly written applications that insist on being in the boot drive's Applications folder.

External drives are also cheap if you ever want to go that way. Just something to keep in mind.

Maybe this helps. Open app 'Disk Utility' found in the >Applications>Utilities folder :
1. Select the drive on the left side
2. Here you can check you have the right drive. It should say 'lower' since you want to format your 2nd non-startp drive.
3. Choose 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'
4. Click on 'erase', or 'format' (maybe it's different with a non-formatted drive).
That should be it, drive is formatted and should appear on your desktop.

pssss.......you can NOT format a hard drive while booted from it anyway (DU wont let you), so the only drive he COULD select is the empty one
