Alright, so last week my hard drive (STUPID Maxtor) died a terrible death that even Disk Warrior could not fix. So I ordered a Serial ATA 250GB Seagate drive to replace it. However, after installation of the HD, it does not show up when I try to install OS X. I had OS X.4 on the original hard drive (came preinstalled), but the CDs that came with it are 10.3.4. Could this be a problem? I know the cables are fine because OS X finds the damaged HD just fine (just can't install).
My computer:
Dual 2.5Ghz G5
1.5GB RAM
9600 XT
Could the new HD be DOA?! I'm so pissed right now.

Thanks

I ran into this with the installer. The HD was good but it took a shutdown and multiple in restarts for it to see it. ("voodoo"). Don't have much to add other than if you can afford it. Buy another HD. No one should be running a g5 without a backup internal HD.

at the end of the day use a back up program or to clone the drive (always handy) use super duper.

Have you formatted the new drive to hfs? The new seagate drive is probably formatted to NTFS which mac os x can not understand or use.

When you launch the installer go into the installer menu and then disk utility.
Your hard drive should be listed in the list of available drives.
Click on it, and then the format tab and then erase it with HFS.

Hey, thanks guys!! I booted up again off the 10.3.4 CD and made 2 partitions using Disk Utility, but I had to restart again for it to recognize both partitions as viable destination volumes. But now I got it installing 10.3.4 as we speak (type?), and then when I get 10.4 I can just reinstall over the OS partition! Oh happy day.
