I posted this a few weeks back...
my G4 dual1GHz, 1gig ram takes 3-4 restarts every morning to boot up. each time it boots fine then after 5 mins or so the crash of death and a manual restart is all I can do. Once not crashing works perfectly. The same problem can also happen on waking from sleep.
As kindly suggested by forum posters I swopped RAM around tried all the combos, tried just one stick of RAM etc. Also done a low level format and re installed the job lot from scratch.
can anyone help please?

Maybe a badly seated CPU ? The RAM is what can cause things like these, but you tested it all with no avail.

Sounds like a defective motherboard or a defective cpu. There is nothing much you can do except sending it in for repair.

Meaning it's not quite where it should be. Mostly just removing and then re-placing the CPU will do the trick, but beware you might need to re-apply thermal paste, I'm not quite sure.
It can happen to RAM modules, PCI or AGP cards. Something could just be 0.5mm off and therefore it can cause problems. If this is the case, then it could solve your problem, but I can't guarantee that that is your problem.
Maybe the best thing you can do is send it in. If you feel up to re-seating the CPU, then go for it. Apple should have a 'how-to' guide somewhere on it's support site. Or you can check out MacFixIt. I wouldn't do this unprepared. Check what you need first.
Good luck.

just to say thanks to all those who gave me suggestions.
last month I took the gamble of trying to reseat the motherboard. got as far as taking the screws off everything and disconnecting all the internal stuff, then got stumped n scared cos there was some more hardcore work needed to actually lift the thing out.
I left it and just put it back together, but would you believe it, now there are no more crashes!
seems just pulling out and putting in the connections and removing and replacing the screws did it! maybe somethng was not connected properly, I dunno.
anyway thought it is always nice to hear a success story and that all the free advice does help.
