G4 how to write a CD! Help Please!

Want to get back into Mac after a few years off.

I Had a 9200 a few years ago with an external CD writer and with Toast installed and had no problem writing CD's

I Bought this second hand G4 with an internal CD writer thats looks original fitment and cant get it to write to a CD

I drag a document into CD icon and file copy progress bar shows copy progress.

Then when I eject it asks "do you want to burn" I enter "yes" and nothing appears to happen.

Seems like a lack of software or what??

CD's read fine and CDRW unit seems to be fitted and is recognised in the volume directory

Help appreciated please!!

Also forgot to mention my OS is 9.2

has any body got any idea as to why it wont write to CD
