Has anyone upgraded an iMac G3 to use an internal "superdrive"?
OR
Does anyone know of a suitable make of drive to replace the CD-R drive in there
at the moment so that I can burn DVD's?
I know a couple of companies can offer an upgrade but at $250 it does seem to
be too expensive.
Cheers

The drive in the iMac G5 ought to fit. The one in my Rev A is a Matsushita UJ-825, FWIW. I know there are other makes used in other Rev As, and the Rev Bs have still another of course (since they're DL burners).

Not the actual burning, no - that would be about the same as a G5. It is only limited by the disk interface, and the iMac G3 has UATA - good enough. Encoding DVD video would be horribly slow, but you can use the DVD for data, or for burning pre-encoded files.

So you guys say it would take a long time to encode for a DVD. If I use toast 6 how long would it take, do you think, to encode say a 10 minute video?
Cheers
