Just picked up a dual 2Gig G5 today and it came with 2 256MB RAM chips. I want to add 2GB.
Can I add 2 1 Gig chips and keep the 2 256MB chips for a totaly of 2.5GB? Do they need to be installed in pairs or in any particular order?
Also, where do you recommend I buy the RAM? I'm thinking about www.ramjet.com.
Thanks for any info!

Yes, the G5 can recognize DIMMs up to 2GBs in size (actual max capacity is 16GBs, possibly 32GBs).
You don't need to install the RAM in any specific slots, just so long as they're corresponding.
I recommend getting Crucial RAM from NewEgg.com. Can't go wrong with Viking or Kingston, either.

Thanks for the reply. What do you mean by 'corresponding'?

Well, if you have an 8 RAM slot machine, you can basically count the slots as follows from top to bottom.
Bank 1)
A4
A3
A2
A1
Bank 2)
B1
B2
B3
B4.
Your two 256MB sticks should be in A1 and B1 as I recall. So if you add two more DIMMs, you would want them to occupy the same numbered slots. Whether it be A3 and B3, or A4 and B4, just so long as they correspond.

No, what Lateralus is saying is that the matching pairs should go in each of the bank's matching slots. Here is an illustration from Apple's Power Mac G5 UG Processor PDF (although this is showing the 8 slotted G5):
In simple terms, one module is installed in one of the first sets (banks) of slots, and the other module is installed in the corresponding slot of the other set of slots. And be sure to match up the indentation in the module with the rib of the slot (the small part in the middle of the slot that is raised).

Install matching pairs in A1 and B1, then another matched pair in A2 and B2 and so on.

The 2 256MB modules are installed in A1 and B1, meaning you can only add 2 more modules. If you get 2 1GB modules you should install them in slots A2 and B2. They mirror each other outwards. Just get 2 of the same modules and install them in the only available slots...
