This is on my new G5 2.0 DP... I am noticing that when I do a CD burn,it emits this loud high pitched noise, the kind where if you turn your head you can alter the volume a bit. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a sign of a defective drive? I've owned and used many burners and never heard anything like this.

You mean like a spinning-cd sound, or something different? When it reads cd's it its kinda like a high pitched sound...

Nah, it's in addition to the regular high speed cd noise you'd expect, and it's only when doing a cd burn. It's very high frequency and kinda inconsistent... Like an old monitor or television set that's about run its course, you smack the screen and it might stop... that kind of thing. Does that make sense to anyone else

That's odd. I haven't noticed anything like that on my G5.

This may sound weird, but have you tried different burning software? Is the sound there with all the different apps? Is it there when you burn a DVD? Since you mention only CD's...

There is also a known G5 issue where the PSU's emmit a high pitched noise during some uses. Maybe totally off, but do you get the sound during any other instances except when burning?
