Over the last 2 weeks my superdrive on my 20" imac has been ejecting my discs with extra vim & vigor. I went to the apple chat & as I am under warranty, they sent me a new drive. The problem is that the new one is worse than my old one. Music CDs pop out upon auto eject or manual eject onto my floor. My install discs pop out too... Apple had me reset my NVRAM & press the SMU button. But that didn't work. Any ideas as to what is going on before I have them send me another one?

It could be the same thing that happens with women who have too many kids. After a while, they just pop out onto the floor. I would check the lips of the cd opening. My Mac Mini ones are pretty tight and they seem to be the only things that grip the cd. I'm not sure but I don't think the lips are attached to the drive. Aren't they attached to the case?

Of course, it may depend on what CDs you're putting in. With Microsoft installers or Barney music CDs, your imac will try and get them into the nearest bucket . Actually the CDs might be an issue too if they are thin. I used to have CDs that wouldn't even spin up inside a slot-loading drive because they were thin and had a shiny surface.

I thought it might be that, but I have tried purchased music cds(no barney...) as well as os x install discs, game discs,etc... The new replacement from Apple does the same thing.
Good reference to Monty Python though!

Apple says that they are aware of the problem & are having their engineers work on it...
I think it may have to do with the felts at the exit as mentioned. I took the drive out & the felts look a little flimsy. Until then, I play a game of catch me...

I could trade you for the drive in my old iMac DV. It used to eject fine, but these days the discs all get stuck with about an inch peeking out and the drive making noises that make me think it's going to burn up any second now. I have to pull discs out. Works fine otherwise, though.
