I have a 160GB Segate HD on which I had two partitions: 60GB for my laptop backup and the rest for holding media. This HD was inside a Firewire/USB case.

I made a clone of my laptop HD using Disk Utility. I tried to boot the backup on the laptop and Power Mac G3, but it would not boot. I eventually discovered that the chipset in the Firewire case supposedly didnt support booting. So I popped it out and placed it into the G3 and it still wouldnt boot. So I did a bit of research and came accross the following command:

Code:
sudo bless -folder /Volumes/Backup/System/Library/CoreServices \ -bootinfo /usr/standalone/ppc/bootx.bootinfo
So I ran it on the bootable partition and rebooted. Not only did it not boot, but it also started clicking. It sounded as if it was spinning up and then started clicking. This now happens eveytime the machine powers on. Also, the HD is no longer mounting and is not even recognized in System Profiler. Now is this just a coincidence (is it that the hardrive just happened to die), or could this have something to do with the bless command?

Try Disk Utility. If you are using 10.3 or 10.4, Disk Utility will let you select the unmounted HD and shows the SMART status. That will tell you if there is a hardware failure.

If you are lucky, Disk Utility will be able to repair the drive. Otherwise, use Disk Warrior. Or reformat the drive and use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to clone your drives.

I already tried disk utility. The drive isnt even detected, thats why it doesnt appear in system profiler. It doesnt see it.

your symptoms sound like a famous case of "the click of death" coming from your drive. i'd say the drive is dead. the bless command only modifies some data on the drive for booting.

After trying it in a G3, the external firewire case, and a PC running Linux I am now pretty sure its just dead. Its a brand new HD (barely 2 months old). And whats frustrating is that its my backup HD. My laptop (for which it was the backup) has died. Now the backup is dead too

That's really terrible; I'm so sincerely sorry.
