Hi there!
Is installing a second hard drive on the G5 a no-brainer? It seems fairly easy to do when reading the manual, but I've seen some folks with problems on this and other forums. (2nd drive not recognized etc)
What do I need to keep in mind? Any good tips?
By the way, the hard drive I'm installing is a Western Digital Caviar 250GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM
I had some problems installing the extra RAM, so I just thought I'd check with you all before I do anything this time. Better safe than sorry. I am a real newbie
Take care,
K

Hi Macmad!
Yeah, I already read that thread, and it looks ok. But the guy in the other thread is replacing his harddrive while I am installing a second one, so should we really do things the same way?
I mean, the installation itself is fairly clear to me, cause the Mac manual describes this very well. What is more unclear to me is what to do when I restart the mac after the installation?
For example:
1. How do I determine or set the master/slave relationship between the two drives? Do I need to?
2. When I reformat the new drive, what format do I go for? Is HSF + the correct one?
3. I guess "journalling" should be set to "off" on the new hard drive?
4. I use my mac for Final Cut Pro and will use the new hard drive as a scratch disc, how do I arrange this setting?
5. Installing a second harddrive should not affect the original harddrive in any way, right?
Dude, I´m really sorry if these are silly questions, but this is totally new to me and I am so afraid of doing something wrong. That is why I obsess about everything. I am a real controlfreak, yes....
Thanks for feedback!
K

The drive is SATA, there is no master/slave relationship. I'd use HFS+ with journalling enabled.
Power down your mac, physically install the drive (connect both cables). Start-up your mac, and run "Disk Utility". Find and format the drive (DON'T click on the wrong one!), when the format is finished, it will appear on your desktop.
Perhaps someone with FCP experience knows about the relevant settings.

I'd have to agree with those settings, those are more or less the standard settings.
