Hilo

I've been offered what I think is a good deal - a 5 month old G5 iMac 20" with 2GB of RAM - for a tasty price, but I'm wondering if it's rev A or rev B. And I've heard some ugly stories about rev A systems regarding noise and heat dispersal.

Can anyone tell me when rev B systems were released, or how to tell which version this is?

The Rev A has a 1.8GHz G5 and Rev B has a 2.0GHz G5. Rev A has a 64MB GeForce 5200Ultra GPU and Rev B has some kind of 128MB Radeon (9600 Mobility?) GPU.

5 months old it's likely a Rev A. I believe the Rev B was released in May.

The Rev B iMacs were released on May 3rd, 2005. The 20"ers only exist in one model, so the easiest would be to check the clockspeed - 1.8 GHz for Rev A and 2.0 GHz for Rev B. To check this, boot the machine and select "About this Computer" from the Apple menu. It will show the clockspeed.

FFR, the Rev B systems have a regular Radeon 9600/128 MB - no Pro, no XT, no Mobility, no nothing. If you need to check that, you can do that in the Apple System Profiler, which you reach by clicking "More Info" in the About box above.

Hmm, maybe this isn't such a good deal. It's definitely rev A, and the seller wants about 1200 (CDN), which is half what a new one would cost. On the other hand a new one would have a better video card but much less RAM, which would jack the price up even more.

Thank you all for your insight.
