Sonnet doesn't offer a 7457, only the 7455.

If the price of the 2GHz 7447 is comparable to a 7455 or a 7457 in the 1.4GHz range, get the 2GHz.

Very good question indeed. I am in the same dilemma.

I would go for the Sonnet based on brand considerations and lower (or no) overclocking, but I think experience only could really tell.

Thanks to all willing to share their impressions based on usage.

All Quicksilver Powerlogix upgrades run under overlocking.

- The 2ghz is a 1.7ghz.
- The 1.8ghz is a 1.6ghz rated...

For this reason I ask what's the most safe upgrade. I decline for non-overlocked upgrades, like 7457-55, but I want to know what's the real perfomance in the 2ghz 7447 (no L3) Vs 1.4ghz 7455 (L3).

In macsales the price are:

Powerlogix 2ghz: $369
Sonnet 1.4ghz: $349

Cache L3 or not cache L3, this is the question

Thx.

The 2GHz is based on 1.60GHz chips.
The 1.8GHz is as well.

As far as I know, Freescale only supplies the 7447A at 1.42GHz and 1.60GHz speeds.

Anyways, I wouldn't put any worry into an overclocked upgrade. They're throughly tested at the speeds they're shipped at before hitting the market, and are backed with a replacement warranty regardless.

The L3 cache is not enough of a factor to make up for a 600MHz clock speed advantage. I'd definitely go for the 2GHz model.

Lateralus is spot on about the L3 cache and Freescale 7447 clock speeds.

I recently (a few months ago) installed a 1.4GHz Sonnet. Not bad. However, if I were to do this over, I'd get the GigaDesigns dual 1.8GHz upgrade. You pay a little more, but in the long run it has more value for the money.

Live and learn -- too bad learning often involves an outlay of money that I really don't have...<sigh>
