I have an internal hard drive that suddenly won't appear on desktop or in menus. It appears in system profiler and disk utility verifies that everything's okay with it. In disk utility the disk has the following information

Mount Point : /Volumes/McBackup Capacity : 233.6 GB (250,865,934,336 Bytes)
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Available :
Owners Enabled : Yes Used :
Number of Folders : 0 Number of Files : 0

I know that the number folders/files is wrong. It was at least half full.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Bob

Either something is wrong with the drive, or someone wiped it when you weren't looking. See what Disk Utility first aid says.

What does the SMART status (at the bottom of the main window of Disk Utility) say? Verified? Or something else?

What does Disk Utility first aid say? Select the drive in Disk Utility and go for the repair option.

If Disk Utililty doesn't fix the problem, give Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro a try.

When I run verify (in disk utility) it says" volume passed verification". When I repair it says "no repairs were necessary." When it's running verify and repair the drive icon in disk utility changes to a hard disk. When it's done it returns to the blank sheet icon.

Since it says that there's no data on the drive should I try erasing and hoping that at least that allows it to remount?

Thanks,

Bob

If you've given up on recovering the files on the disk, then you may as well reformat it to see if it will function. It's probably not a good idea to trust the drive with anything important, obviously.

I've discovered the problem - but not the solution. It seems that privileges have been reset so I don't have privileges to change the settings (I'm the administrator and no other user on the computer has access). I suppose this should be in the Mac OS forum. In disk utitlity I'm not given the option to verify or repair permissions.

Thanks,
Bob

found the solution!
ok, what happened to both of us was that the privilages were changed...the solution, get the free software called batchmod
once you have that, open it and then:
1. set the file as your missing drive. do so by typing in /volume/<name of drive>/
for me, it is /volume/video editing/

2. next, for the owner box and group, select what it was before (it should be your account's name...like for me...it was ryanvalle...

3. then for the following boxes, check, not dash, R, W, and X for owner and group..i didnt do everyone...but you can...

then click apply and look for your missing drive again on your desktop!
woot woot!
