Hi,
I'm a relative newbe to Mac's but a true computer geek. I have an old Power Mac 8100/100 AV that I got from work a few years back and I'm trying to fix it up to give to a friend. The system was working fine last I used it over two years ago. I had upgraded it from OS 7.5 to OS 9.1 back before I stopped playing with it. When I went to test it for my friend before I gave it to him, I noticed if I had a CD in the CD-ROM drive, the system would not boot, also if I inserted a disk while the system was running it would hang and you can not even open the drive.
I didn't remember seeing this issue before I stopped using it. Thinking is was the drive itself, I swapped it for a Toshiba SCSI drive from an old DEC server I had, but that was not recognized by the OS. I then broke down and bought a used 12X drive on ebay and installed it but I get the same results as the original drive.
I checked the Extensions folder and everything is in the for the CD-ROM except the HighSeirra extension, but the disk hangs with ISO9660 ad CD Audio. I checked the cables and termination and it looks fine.
Can anyone PLEASE HELP a dumb newbe on what he's doing wrong?!?!
Thanks

I wouldn't call you a newbie. I have to say, though, that what you're describing is a very unusual crash, one I have never heard of before. You've already clean installed the OS, so I can't suggest that remedy. Have you booted with only the base extensions or extensions off by using Extensions Manager or the shift key at startup? Perhaps you should try zapping the PRAM by holding command+option+p+r at startup and waiting for two or three extra startup chimes. If you've done all of the above, you may be looking at a hardware issue. On the other hand, if you were able to boot from the system disc, it sounds more like software.

I tried booting without extensions and put a CD in, looks like it's not hardware. I could see the drive, but it would not mount it. I then rebooting and it would accept an Audio CD, but data CD's still froze the system.
I then tried to clear the PRAM as you suggested and then inserted a OS 7.5.3 CD in it. and I gor the following error:
Sorry,
System error occurred
"Finder"
error type 41
This completely hung the system with no mouse responce.
I rebooted the machine with the CD now and it makes it to the extensions load and hangs when it gets to the CD.
Sounds like the Apple CDROM/DVD extension is toast. Unfortunatly, I cant find my OS 9.1 CD anymore, I have the box and all the paperwork, but the CD is nowhere to be found. All I have is a 7.5.3 CD and 10.2. Neither is what I need.
I guess I'll have to see if I can get Apple to send me a replacement 9.1 disk. Till then I'll have to wait.
Thanks for the help!

I did a little more research and it looks like the error I got was related to either a corrupt Finder or bad preferences. In either case, I need a OS 9.1 CD to fix it.
So, off to find me a OS 9.1 CD!!
