I added a Seagate 300gb hard drive to my G5 dual 2.3 which came with a Western Digital 250. Which one should I use as the main system bootable drive?
When I get a new coomputer in 2 years or so I would probably want to take to Seagate out and keep it for the new computer. Does that mean I should use the Western Digital as the main drive and the Seagate for backups only?
Whatever drive ends up being the backup drive will not be used that much and will spend most of the time spun down, so methinks that drive would last longer and I would want to keep it when getting a new mac down the line.
The Seagate is quieter though and I might enjoy using that as the system drive because of this.
Any thoughts on what I should do?

Not worry about it. Pick one and go with it However, if one has a larger cache and quicker access times, or faster rotational speed ( although they both are probably 7200rpm ) go with it.

IIRC, Seagates have a 5 year warranty and the WD is 1 or 3 years, yes? If so, use the Seagate as the main drive. If it goes bad, you will have longer to get it replaced
The important thing is that you have a back-up plan in place. So many people don't, and when their drive and data go bye-bye, they come here & cry for help..... wah wah wah........

I have the Western Digital Raptor 74 GB 10,000 rpm as system disc (WDC WD740GD), quite speedy.

I have the Maxtor 300GGB drive as my boot drive. 95% as fast as a Raptor (which I also have in my system), but tons of space. I filled up my Raptor too quickly as a main HD... too many big apps.

So guys... how much faster do these HDs make your machines feel? Like... is it very noticable? I'm thinking when I get my G5 I might go with one 250Gig 7200 and then get a Raptor as my boot drive. Any suggestions? I'd probably end up using the 250 gig drive then mainly for video projects with Final Cut Express and what not.

There are only SATA raptors, although you could use an adapter, too. (Those adapters are often problematic, though.)

It will be faster, but if it will be worth it is another question … for the same price, you could get a much larger drive. That's for you to decide.

Yes they are faster, but in a G5, which already has SATA, the difference won't be as dramatic as in my B&W G4 with it's lowly ATA/66 set-up
In this arrangement, I estimate an overall performance gain of about 3x.

I just ordered PCI SATA card and two 250 gig SATA Maxtor 16 Meg cache drives for my G4 Sawtooth that has 1.2 Ghz upgrade. Can't wait to see the difference.

My dual 2.7 came with a Maxtor 250GB drive which I immediately delegated to backup duty. All the other drives I use are Seagates. While some drives and models may boast some better numbers under some situations, Seagates are still the best drives out there. It's just the way it is. I'd recommend using your Seagate as the boot drive. It'll be more reliable and likely faster than the 250GB WD.
Incidentally, in addition to the internal Seagates (two) I have five I rotate for various purposes in a couple of FirmTek external hot-swap SATA cases run off the FirmTek 4 channel SATA card. In can’t say enough good things about this card. It's fast, truly play 'n play and is the only SATA card that allows booting. As for extra backup drives I use a hot-swap Granite Digital FireWire case with Seagate PATA drives.
See a theme emerging here? SEAGATE.

hey is it possible to have 2x250Gb drive in the G5 and when formatting the two hard drives use the software raid option to create 1x500Gb drive??? I am gonna buy a new G5 next week when the new one comes out and i wanna buy a extra 250Gb HD but I have never heard this been done before so I just wondered if anyone has done it and how well it performs?
