I've got a G4 1.25 Ghz that get this: spins the fan up higher when I plug in firewire devices.

Also, plugging a device into a port often knocks the other one off.

Is this a motherboard replacement issue or should I think about getting a new machine?
The G4 is only 18 months old, and has been pretty much trouble free aside from the fan thing.

My fan speed changes whenever I put my iPod in it's dock (connected via firewire) or take it out.

I don't have enough firewire peripherals attached to test if one knocks the other off, though. Maybe I'll check tonight.

I have to say, my mac has been so noisy since Tiger...I'm really looking into replacing all the fans and building some airflow guides into the case. This is so lame!

I have a MDD 1.25 GHz with a LaCie FW hard disk and a LaCie DVD burner attached to it, I can not perceive an increment in the fan loudness once the FireWire devices are on. Weird…

I also have a 1.25 GHz MDD running 10.3.9. No change to fan noise here when FW devices are plugged in.........
