Is it possible to share a Superdrive between a Powermac (with the drive) and a Powerbook without one?

I was thinking something along the lines of the firewire disk mode.

I would like to use the Superdrive on the Powermac to burn CDs/DVDs for backup from the Powerbook.

Thoughts?

Don't think so. The closest I can think of would be to use IP-over-Firewire, setup a network between the two drives and make a disk image of the PBs drive (or part of it) on a network share from the Powermac and then burn that image.

Hmmm...

Maybe, I could share the home folder on the Powerbook and have Backup3 try to back that up over the network.

Only if you put it in a Firewire case.

In Roxio Toast Titanium 7 (don't know about previous versions), look in OPTIONS --> PREFERENCES --> SHARING. Check the box to allow sharing of the burner.

Not exactly sure if this would be the same, but I use my PowerMac and Superdrive to backup my server drive - Samba Shares. Couldn't you "share" the Powerbook drive/folders and backup that way?

What PowerMac do you have? A PowerMac G5 behaves like a FW hub and mounts all drives while in FW target disk mode. Earlier PowerMacs only mount the ATA 0 drive.

It should mount in FW target disk mode. That's how I got my 10.4 DVD to install on my CD-R-only tower. Whether you can burn to it is another matter, but it's worth a shot. I'm curious.

Actually, my g4/400 gigabit ethernet powermac (upgraded to a 1.3ghz gigadesigns) mounts all drives connected to it. I've used it's optical drive in FW target disk mode.

But have you used it to burn files? IME, the optical drive can only read in target disc mode.

I have latest Dual 2.3 Ghz.

So, in theory, I should be able to reboot the PowerMac in Firewire disk mode and mount the SuperDrive so the Powerbook should be able to see and write to it?

Coolio.

Now, I hope that Backup3 can handle that.

Firewire disk mode is only to access the Master IDE Hard Disk on a G4 or all SATA HDDs on a G5. You should not be able to access the Superdrive. Try it and let us know.

Nope, that changed. Many Macs, including aluminum PowerBooks, PowerMac G5s, and later (and possibly others) now share all the ATA disks. But you can't burn -- the optical drive via TDM is read-only (and slow at that). I've tried!

It appears that the firmware shares the mounted disc onto the bus, not the physical drive.
