i have an imac 400dv with 2 dead usb ports. mouse and keyboard do not work. could this be software or is it most likely hardware? otherwise it works fine , boots up with no error msg.

Could be either. Try using either mouse or keyboard before the system boots - like holding Cmd-Opt-P-R until you've heard the boot beep twice to zap the pram. If that works, it's not hardware,

If that fails it could still be your keyboard that's busted. Don't forget your mouse is likely plugged into the keyboard.

I used a different keyboard and mouse and it made no difference. I’m going to try to zap the pram next. But I’m not sure how this works if the usb port is dead??

You won't be able to zap the pram that way. Open the little door on the iMac's backside and look for a little black button. With the computer turned off hold the button down for 10 seconds.

It doesn't. That's how we can tell if it is the USB port or a software fault.
