hey is it possible to have 2x250Gb drive in the G5 and when formatting the two hard drives use the software raid option to create 1x500Gb drive??? I am gonna buy a new G5 next week when the new one comes out and i wanna buy a extra 250Gb HD but I have never heard this been done before so I just wondered if anyone has done it and how well it performs?

Like this is what i am thinking right...

1. Install the damn thing,
2. Reinstall the OS but during the installation process, run the disk utility and create 1 hard drive using the 2x250 drives and put it on raid 1
3. Install the os...

I'm hoping to get 1 500Gb main drive with a theoretical transfer rate of 300mb/s what do u guys think??? anyone done this before? is it possible? or am i gonna get stuck with 2x250 individual drives? I got two external firewire drives 1x320Gb and 1x160Gb... trying to get near the 1Tb mark hehe... But in all seriousness, I wanna create a raid to get max performace... I dont like partitioning my drive cos I just don't like that practice so I always just have one drive...

Any advice on how to achieve max performance is appreciated... thought I spend only £80 on a 250 disk instead of forking out £150 for the 400Gb option...

Don't use RAID 0 unless you really, really don't care about the data stored.

It is possible: however the real-world performance increase won't be as good as you hope, and the risk of catastrophic data loss is WAY higher with a RAID0.

Do a search, there was a thread just about this topic.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
