A family member of mine has a 350mhz slot load iMac. It was recently damaged in a thunder storm. The internal modem was fried and one of the two usb ports does not work. I bought a powered 4port hub to plug into the one and only working port. Plugged the keyboard, printer, and a recently purchased external modem into the hub. The modem says it WILL work with a powered hub.

I cannot get the external modem to work on the iMac. I have brought the external modem home and hooked it up to my Quicksilver and it works fine. The difference is, I connected the usb modem directly to Quicksilvers usb port and not to a hub like on the iMac. I am thinking that may be a problem.

I would like to get information on how to replace the nonworking usb port. And possibly directions on how to replace the internal modem. Does anyone know of a website with good directions and pictures.

Also, a good place to order the parts.

That iMac has all the port componets soldered to the motherboard, so it will be very difficult to replace them - unless you are very good at soldering surface mount devices.
I'm sure others here may suggest you try to find a replacement motherboard - though knowing the age and value of that model, you may not want to throw any more money at it.

The service manual was once called 'imac_sl.pdf' and you may be able to find what components to replace.

Good Luck
