On the new iMacs that were announced last week there is an external video connector that Apple is listing for "video mirroring", just like on the iLamps, and ATI lists the video chip that is going into the computes as capable of driving two independent displays. I am wondering if there will be a similar hack as with the iLamps to enable "video spanning" so that you could use an external monitor.

I will probably wind up buying the 20" version no matter what (to replace a 450Mhz Cube), but just thought I would ask if anyone has any ideas on this.

I'd say it's only a matter of time before the hack becomes available. Perhaps email the creator and ask, I imagine it's technically possible and he's just waiting for a bit of info from an owner of the new iMac.
