Anyone that can help me out here I would greatly appreciate it. I have done some searches for this info but not come up with anything concrete enough to make a decision on. I am as of a month ago helping out a small underfunded private school with their lab of 10 PM G4 Dual 450 GigE w/ 17"Apple Display CRT (ADC Style) because as of a month or two ago they started losing machines due to power supply problems. Originally it was 2.. then 2 more.. then 2 more. They have already fixed the first 4 and I will be replacing the PS's on the other 2 soon. As soon as I heard what was going on though I advised them to not use the working machines until we solved the problem. We had the utility co place a supply meter with a log function on their end but they didn't pick up any variances on their end. Being a small school again they only have a basic electrician working here who seems to think everything on his end is fine but doesn't have the right equipment to test with. So what I need to do now in order to get these working is either get some kind of UPS or Line Conditioner to take out the dips and spikes in the voltage. Most of the UPS's I have seen that have AVR are fairly expensive and we wouldn't be able to afford 10 individual units so I had been looking at some APC Back UPS RS 1500 units and hoping to put 2-4 units on each as the 1500 has 6 avr regulated outlets per the specs. My biggest fear here is that the power draw for each machine with the adc display would be too much to have more than 2 mahcines on one ups at a time. Can anyone provide me with some power sonsumption figures for the GigE or make a better educated guess than me. If you also know a better way to tackle this problem that I can purchase for between 5-700 dollars let me know as well. Again it would have to cover all ten machines though. So thanks in advance for the help.

Rich
P.S. I know by going this route I am skirting the real issue but we need to get these running asap and in order to get an electrician in here that may be able to help it would take a while and take a big chunk out of my budget.

APC has a UPS sizing tool on their website to answer questions just like this. Choose "Configure by Devices" in the middle column, then put in the specs of your computers.

Thanks for the link it is much appreciated, I had actually looked at that before and they say that for 4 Powermac G4 Duals I need at least an RS1500 which is in itself an 865w ups PLUS an additional Battery Pack for it for each. I am trying to use some real world figures and basic match to determine if the battery pack is needed (or what is really needed for that matter) because we really cant afford to spend more than $700 and with the ups at $200 each and the pack another $115 it would kill their entire tech repair budget for the year after all the repairs weve done till this point plus those. If it has to be done that way I at least want some numbers to say "Here is our consumption and this is why we need these units"... so if anyone has any figures that would be great!

Thanks again,
Rich
