Hi, I live in NJ, and I am an international student.

Actually, I have a question about Apple Service..

My wife bought an iMac when iPod style iMac G5 first had launced.

After about 11 months, the iMac had shut down or gone to sleep mode automatically

when I use Adobe Photoshop CS or Final Cut Pro.

At first, I suppose heavy memory-required applications might make this problem..

So I brought Mac to Apple Store SOHO, and they replaced new fan and power supply.

It took five days.

After the repair service, iMac seemed to be good during 3 weeks.

Last month, my iMac had same problem again, this problem occures more continuously.

I had to go Apple Store SOHO again, one of Genious Bar Staff replaced logic board, fan,

power supply in my iMac-almost everything had replaced.

Unfortunately, after a week, same problem occured again more seriously.

At that time, I launched itunes and play music in my playlist, and I downloaded some

files on my $400 WIN-TEL PC; this computer almost always turns but OK--never shut down automatically.

Suddenly, my iMac shut down with "boom!" sound.

I try to press power button continiously. However it didn't work.

After 20 minutes, I finally turn on my mac.

Yes! I went to SOHO again, unfortunately I do not have car, so when I go to Apple Store,

always I have to lift my imac.

Geniuses read my system log file, and they told to me its problem is based on Software.

Oh! my god! They seemed to be a fool, I tried to explain that it is hardware problem.

They don't hear my saying.

In my country, in this case, usually Apple change new iMac.

As this happening, I and my wife cannot use imac long time, and it is hard to

go to SOHO because I live in NJ, and I don't have any car.

If it was your case, how can you solve this problem?

Same trouble occurs continiously after repair.

Give some advise for me.

Thank you for reading.

Maybe you have one with the leaky capacitors. If you heard a boom, maybe one of the capacitors burst.

Check this site:

http://www.apple.com/support/imac/re...ensionprogram/

to see if your imac is in the range of serial numbers and if so, follow the instructions. The problem is quite widespread.

If it's not that, I'm not sure what it could be. The problem with the G5s is they run too hot. I reckon the Intel Macs should be cooler since they use less power. If you do get it replaced, I would probably just sell it and buy a Mac Mini until the Intels come out. I run CS and Final Cut Pro on it and it's about 1/3 the price of a G5.

Thank you for your reply!!

However, when my iMac had the second "intermittent shutting down problem", an employee of Apple

replaced not only power supply but also logic board in my iMac.

Nevertheless, my mac has same problem. It makes me so sad and angry

Anyway, osxrules, you are genious!

When my mac will repaired again(my mac is in SOHO now), I would have to consider about selling my mac.

If my mac sold successfully, I would buy new powerbook(It is so cheap and appropriate spec!)

Actually, I wait for mactel :-)

Thank you so much, osxrules!
