im picking up a refurb dual 2ghz g5. i have a radeon 9800pro 128 that i used in my old g4 its only 2x/4x agp. wondering if the radeon 9600 already in the g5 will be better than the 9800 that i already have. and im kind of in question will 2x/4x agp cards work with an 8x slot? i know people have used the g5 cards in older g4s but i dont know if it will work the other way around
Thanks in advance

Do you think a '9600' is going to be better than a '9800'? No.
The 9800 Pro is significantly faster than a 9600.
As for using the 9800 Pro in your G5, it depends. Off the shelf Mac Edition 9800s can be used in the G5, but it requires running a molex power cable around the machine and piggy-backing it off of the optical drive's power cable. Not the prettiest. But since you'd mentioned in the other thread that your card is a hacked PC version, it's hard to say that it will work at all without knowing the extent to which it was modified.

faster it may be yes, im asking will it being only a 4x/2x agp card affect it at all. i know the 9600 is a very good card the way it is. but just wondering if the ago card it self being slower affect it that much to where itd be more worth using the 9600

AGP 8X has only proven to be noticeably faster than AGP 4x in artificial benchmarks. In real world applications (including games) the 9800 Pro will dominate the 9600 when GPU power is needed even with 4x vs 8x.

This raises an interesting question. Everyone's excited about the use of PCIe on the new Powermacs, but have we even reached the point where a previous top-of-the-line G5 could saturate an AGP 8X card?
