Hmm, some early reports from the Apple discussions say that the new iMacs are not that much hot. And they don't have the noise issues the olders have. Well, I guess we will have to wait for more reports to see clearly if the situation is really improved.

So far my iSight imac just gets "warm" not "hot" and its also silent so far. I cant even hear the harddrive.

Well I dont know if you have a mighty mouse yet but... When I first set my iMac up I thought it wasnt working right because I couldnt right click. Turns out it was set up as a one button mouse as default

I know the shape isnt perfect but I LOVE the Mighty Mouse. Apple should have done this years ago. I love how it has that simple Apple look yet has 4 buttons that work really well. Now just have to wait for the wireless version so all I have is a power cable. God I hate wires.

Well, it might be overkill but buying a cheap, small desk fan and pointing it at the iMac when it's on probably wouldn't hurt.

I did this for my PowerBook.....

Wow, can you be any less negative? Why kill the guy's fanfare? He's excited about getting a really cool product and from the looks of the amount of postings he has it looks like he or she may be new to the Mac community.
That being said, to the poster, I would get more memory if you can afford it so you can multitask and have a very enjoyable experience and I would recommend to TDK media to burn DVDs at the fastest burn speed. Congrats and enjoy your new toy!!

Another thing I just found out about on the new iSight iMacs. You can put your Mac to sleep via the remote. You just hold down the play/pause button till the snoring remote graphic comes up on the screen. another quick press will wake it back up.

any computer will get hot.... i'm guessing hoodmulti was just probably remembering the fiasco of the first generation iMacs that would overheat. I'm sure that Apple did some re-engineering to alleviate that problem.

imacgeek is probably sitting in front of his desk just salivating over his new iMac. Add some RAM, speakers, and a popcorn machine and enjoy the experience.

Yea

When you hold down the play button for a certain amount of time a graphic comes up on screen of the remote with "Zzzzz" coming out of it. Indicating you put it to sleep via the remote.

Here is a screen shot:

It is a magnet that does the trick.

The latest iMacs have a heat pipe to help with cooling.

I unfortunately am still having overheat problems with my Rev A iMac G5, but Apple pretty much remedied this issue with the Rev B release and seems to have gone farther with their cooling system in Rev C. I would guess things like the heat pipe is what made Apple build the Rev C model to not be as user upgradeable as the previous 2 models.

Not as upgradeable? What do you mean? I was under the impression the only upgrade options in RevA and Rev B was RAM, are you saying that isn't possible in the latest update?

If that's true, it's crazy!

From the iMac-iSight user manual, page 62:

Do Not Make Repairs Yourself
Your iMac G5 does not have any user-serviceable parts, except the memory (for information about adding memory, see Chapter 4, “Installing Memory,” on page 47). Do not attempt to open your iMac G5. If your iMac G5 needs service, consult the service and support information that came with your computer for instructions about how to contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple for service. If you open your iMac G5 or install items other than the memory, you risk damaging your equipment, and such damage is not covered by the limited warranty on your iMac G5.

Rev A & B allow user replacement of RAM, HD & optical drive (the whole back comes off). Rev C models only have one user accessible RAM slot, everything else is not user accessible.

I've just got my new model isight imac 17in home and started playing with it. The thing is as silent as my powerbook 15! so so quiet! Its without doubt the quietist desktop ive ever owned and ive had an origional imac, 2 powermacs and a powerbook, its only equal to the powerbook!

Maybe its because I live in England and my room isnt in excess of 80 bloody degrees like everyone who mentions noise issues seems to be!

I have to agree with you, NEWSDAY (A newspaper for Long Island, New York), Put out an article about how it overheats, they rant tests on it, and it does, ( I also have a newer one myself so I know). The article said that over 8% of the iMacs sold in America By Apple were sent back and either repaired from overheating problems or replaced. Anyways they listed some suggestions, here they are:

1: Try to shut the system down or put it to sleep whenever possible.
2: Try not to store the unit in tight spaces with no ventillation.
3: Never run the system in temperatures hotter than 90 Degrees.
