...at all these posts from people bending over backwards to tell the world how pleased they are that they bought a product just before a new, upgraded and generally better version was announced. How odd.

I don't see the problem.

Not everyone is that interested in a 0.1ghz upgrade and an ugly black box stuck right in the middle of the boader of the screen
Macbook Pro 15" Rev: Feb08
iPhone & iPod Touch

20" iMac G5, Mac Mini G4 and an iBook G4, all retired.

Well, you. You said products, the iMac is a product of Apple and there has recently been a couple of threads of people saying they were happy with their new iMac so I associated your comments with their threads.

See my reply above.

But my point remains; people seem to be claiming that given the choice, they'd actually prefer one of the older models to the new iSight iMac. And I find that odd.

Well maybe it is like some cars, sometimes model revisions are not that much of an improvement - think of tyhe VW Golf, some say the first one was the best and then it started putting on weight - thought the mark V has apparently been a step in the right direction...maybe not a brilliant analogy.

Well, you *are* talking about the iMac aren't you?

Odd? Well, I saved 500 bucks and that money was better spent on extra RAM (I'm a photographer), storage, and necessary accessories than useless speed increases and an integrated camera. Heck, for the price difference I could even have bought a Mac mini!

After over 20 years owning many personal computers of all flavors, I've found that always running out to buy the very latest is most of the time a waste of money as incremental, or sometimes useless improvements usually cost a big chunk. My RevB cost me 30% less than the new one. On the PC, I would always buy just the previous generation graphics card. Since new generations are released all the time, this insures that you always have something with great and sufficient performance at a fraction of the cost.

"My RevB cost me 30% less than the new one. "

So how is this possible? Is this a refurb from Apple, used one off ebay, off the back of a truck? Does it have a warrenty?

Simply a refurb at $1499 that was lowered to $1299 right after the new ones were announced. No mistery about it. Apple has that price policy that includes refunds when prices are lowered within 10 days of shipping. Last week you could buy a 1.6Ghz G5 iMac with a 17" screen for $749 on the refurb store. Quite a deal I'd say. And look at the ones sold for $849 right now.

Not everyone cares to have an iSight. I suppose if one falls into that group the previous generation iMacs would serve them well. Otherwise the new iMacs are great! I'd rather have a little black lens than a big silver cylinder squatting on top of my iMac. Plus the vid card has always been the iMac's achilles heel. The X600 XT is less obsolete than the 9600, which is nice.

I've seen the posts and smiled myself.

I think the only ones trying to convince themselves are those that paid full price. Anyone that bought a last gen at a discount has nothing to feel bad about..they got a good deal.

I Myself was weighing a last gen 20" at $1499 or a new 17" at $1299. I ended up going with the new model.

Funny you should mention that....

I went along today fully prepared to buy an iSight iMac, but came away with a last gen 20" for £250 less. The saved money's going on extra RAM, Bluetooth keyboard & mouse, beer and weed.

I suppose I should be nibbling a slice of humble pie, given my original post. But when it came down to it this was a better deal for me, and the others are right: the new one really isn't that much better. But I wouldn't have paid full price for the old one over the new, and I sympathise entirely with those that did just before the new revision came out.

What a beautiful machine the iMac is, though... wow

Well, with the Rev A & B models of the iMac G5, the hard drive and optical drive is user replaceable. These aren't user replaceable on the Rev C (iSight) model so what you bought on the Rev C is what you're stuck with for life. Some people might find this a worthwhile tradeoff.
