Does anyone know what i need to hook up my new LCD to my iMac . . . I don't care about spanning, just mirroring would be fine with me.

I will have my iMac in the family room and my LCD in another part of the room, so I don't mind getting a cable to run to the LCD, so that I can show my friends and family slideshows, Videos, and watch tv shows I have recorded previously on my PC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The iMac has VGA, S-Video and composite video outputs, no DVI output. If your LCD TV has VGA input all you'll need is a long VGA cable. However, there is practical limit to the length of a VGA cable. Anything longer than a few meters and you might see some serious video degradation.

edit: The VGA adapter is sold seperately.

The VGA out of the iMacs goes up to, i believe, 2048x1536. S-Video and Composite are both standard NTSC video, or 720x480 (that's if you're in the US; if not, then it's PAL, which is 720x576, i believe)

Use VGA if you your TV supports it. It will be a much higher-quality image than S-Video or Composite (the worst of the three). If you do use S-Video or composite, it probably won't be useful for much besides movies, since the resolution isn't high enough to read text or browse the web conveniently.

Does S-Video have the same distance limitation that VGA about cable lenght?

Does it carry only video signal or audio too?

I want to watch movies from the imac on my TV (which has VGA and S-Video connectors and is 20-22 feet away from the computer).

Will I need an adapter? If yes which one?

Thanks!

VGA and S-video are video only. Either one should work at that length, I'd recommend VGA although the cable may be a bit pricey. For S-video you'd need to buy a separate adapter from Apple.
