After years of a love-hate relationship with Apple products and operating systems since well before System 7, I've finally made the total switch from the bleak PC world to the beauty of Apple. This isn't just any switch; I'm not merely using both platforms in conjunction. It's a complete computing lifestyle switch, devoid of PCs (at least any that I own), but complete with Apple products that were designed to work harmoniously, like my "new" 2nd generation 10gb iPod.
This Saturday, I'm trading my Pentium4 3.0GHz (w/ Hyperthreading) laptop for a Dual 2.0ghz G5 tower. I was first exposed to the wonders of OS X and G5 finesse at my college newspaper, where last year, we purchased two new 1.8GHz dualies to replace some old G4s in production and graphics work. They were incredible, both in aesthetic style and productivity!
I kicked myself for buying this PC laptop back in January '05, but I needed something quick and something portable. But not anymore, I'm now free to make the choices I want and that choice has been made.

Hmm trading a p4 3.0ghz laptop for a g5 dual tower? Dang! That sounds like a really good deal! Value-wise.
How much did you pay for the laptop?

The laptop was $1500 new back in January, and is currently worth $900-1000 on eBay. It was a P4 3.0GHz w/ Hyperthreading and 800MHz bus. 768MB RAM, with 128MB of that dedicated to the ATI 9000 IGP. 80GB HD, 5-in-1 memory card reader/one PCMCIA, USB 2, FW400, 802.11g, 15.4" WXGA wide LCD. Oh and DVD/CD writer/rewriters. I also threw in a 4-to-6 pin firewire cable and fabric laptop case.
And this is what I got: Dual 2GHz G5 tower (old style with 8 RAM slots and PCI-x, not the dumbed down version), original Apple keyboard/mouse, Kensington lightweight wireless keyboard and optical mouse, ADC-VGA adapter, ADC to composite and S-Video out, 3 year AppleCare warranty and manuals, Tiger DVD, lots of random software and music he left on there with "backup" CDs. Not bad, eh?

Sorry, forgot to mention I also had to give $300 cash, but considering everything, I still think I "robbed the bank." His machine, without the extras, would sell for $1500-1800 on eBay, whereas my machine would be $900-1000. Factor in AppleCare, the software, the keyboards/mice, and dongles and it's still a wonderful deal.
