in my new dual 1.8 g5 powermac there are some empty expansion slots. I was hoping to buy a usb expansion card for my external hard-drives but i cant identifiy the slot type.

Here is a photo:

How many ram slots does your Mac have? If it has 8, those are PCI-X slots which are backwards compatable with newer PCI cards, if it has 4, then you have standard PCI slots.

Ok, now I am confused, according to my own knowledge, and this http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl..._2.0_dp_2.html site, your Rev B. DP 2.0 should have standard PCI slots. See point C in the text box at the bottom of the table.

AFAIK, a regular PCI card should fit into the expansion slot of any G5 made so far. I had a DP 1.8 with the PCI-X slots which are 64bit, and I went out and bought a PCI USB card. The card fit just fine in those slots, so I don't know why you're having trouble with yours. What brand is the USB card?

PCI-X is backwards compatible to all newer PCI cards. Only old 5V PCI cards don't work anymore. However your model has PCI slots to begin with. Your USB expansion card will work. But why do you need one to begin with? The G5 has several USB 2.0 connectors already.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I wouldn't call two on the back and one on the front, "several." Apple is stingy with the ports.

You have 64-bit PCI-X slots, but you can put "regular old" PCI cards in them. Be sure to get a USB2 card that is Mac compatible.
