i put an ati 9700pro video card in my dp 800 g4 after removing my gf3. i didnt do anything except replace one card for the other. (the card is a mac version 9700pro.) the box boots ok but i cannot figure out how to install the ati drivers. i downloaded the latest drivers from ati.com but noticed there is no reference to the 9700 at all in the readme files. could this be the problem or is it my newbie exposure to the mac world? what have i done wrong? (again)

Did the card come with a CD with Mac drivers on it?

As for the ATI Displays update (4.5.6 I think), my X850 wasn't listed but it did recognize the card. Have you installing this software? You won't do any harm by trying and my guess is that it will contain support files for the 9700.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

ATi says:
Supports
ATI Retail Products
* RADEON X800 XT MAC EDITION
* RADEON 9800 PRO MAC SPECIAL EDITION
* RADEON 9800 PRO MAC EDITION
* RADEON 9600 PRO PC MAC EDITION
* RADEON 9200 MAC EDITION
* RADEON 9000 PRO MAC EDITION
* RADEON 8500 MAC EDITION
* RADEON 7000 MAC EDITION
* RADEON MAC EDITION (AGP & PCI)
Apple OEM/CTO RADEON Products
* All Apple desktop and portable systems with preinstalled RADEON graphics
* Not all ATI Displays features may be present.

Note that second to last item. The 9700Pro was only offered from Apple, and never as a retail part (ATi confirms this by saying "OEM Version"), so it's covered in the second to last item.
Ditto for crooner's X850.

It won't work in anything but an MDD.

I had one in my heavily upgraded Digital Audio. Worked fine. It's a PC version that I had one of the guys at strangedogs.com flash with the Mac ROM. I took it out because of heat problems inherent in the DA case design, and I'm not cutting any holes in the case. Currently using a 9000 Pro.

As to the OP, if the Mac boots up, it's working. As mentioned earlier, the 9700 was only offered for a very short time as an OEM part in the MDD models. It was never a retail part. So, you'll have to make due with the ATI drivers Apple distributes with the OS.
