I just purchased a refurbished Imac 20" rev B from Apple. I was wondering how many of you out there have purchased these and are having any overheating problems. I hope they fix the problems by now.

I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago but had to send it back in less than a week. You could say it had overheating problems, because it basically caught on fire. Since the first day I had it, I could smell a burning odor, along with the fact that only the bottom half of the screen had full backlighting. One morning, I heard some strange noises and a small amount of smoke came out of the vents. I got what I could off of the HD and shut it down and called Apple. Once I got to an iMac specialist, they offered to refund my money and take back the unit with no questions asked. The guy said they could send me another refurb unit or repair the one I had if I wanted, but he suggested not to do so, do to a "common set of problems" with the rev. A & B iMacs. So.. I got a new 2.1GHz 20" iMac and could not be happier.. much quieter, cooler, brighter, and faster.

I have a Rev. B iMac (specs below) and haven't had a single issue since I purchased it in early June of this year. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB last month, so I was able to look at my capacitors: all of them were pristine, without a single bulge in any of them.
I haven't had any of the following issues (insert knock-on-wood motion here): excessive fan noise, overheating, bulging capacitors, bizarre noises... nothing!
Only a select few of the Rev. B iMacs are faulty - as Apple has stated. I would compare the serial numbers once you purchase it just to be sure it isn't one of the affected machines. You can find that list here:
http://www.apple.com/support/imac/re...ensionprogram/
The difference between the Rev. B & Rev. C iMacs tech-spec wise is minimal. 2Ghz vs. 2.1GHz G5 processor. Radeon 9600 vs. Radeon X600 XT/Pro. At the keynote, Jobs barely mentioned the updated specs because there were so few. If you don't need the iSight camera and can live without Front Row, there is really no reason to purchase the new model.

Actually, the Apple Support link you provided indicates that "only first generation" iMacs are considered to be "affected machines" and that is just the Rev A iMacs with 17 and 20 inch displays at 1.6 and 1.8 GHz.

I must add that my experience was the first ever really bad experience I've had with an Apple product, so I'm not totally bashing the product, I just got unlucky. What had concerned me is the guy I spoke with was so open to the problems they've had with the 2nd revision of the G5 iMac, even though they haven't been as public with it as the Rev. A. I know the updates on the new one seem skimpy, and possibly useless for some, but the Rev. C machine is completely redesigned under its skin.. a far better machine I can see now. I won't use the iSight really, but Photo Booth has become addictive to say the least. If my refurb had been in better condition, I'm sure I would be pleased as well.
