Hi

I was using my iMac (slotloading, 700Mhz G3, 768MB ram, 120GB HD) and suddenly with no warning it seemed to turn off. I thought at first I had kicked the power cord but i checked and it was fine. The power button was still lit up.

I couldnt do anything so i held down the power button to switch it off. Now when I try and turn it on the power button lights up but *nothing* else happens there is no sound at all, hd doesnt spin up or anything. The only thing that works is the power button light and the ability to turn the machine "on"ish and off with the power button.

What do you think?? Has this happened to anyone else?

Personally I reckon its prob the powersupply board. Are these easy to buy? I live in ireland but can order online. Also does anyone have a technical iMac service manual? I've taken it apart before to replace the HD that died two years ago.

thanks
sheesh, that took 8 hours for me to be asked to change my sig...

Yeah, it does sound like something might be blown in the PSU. Remember that you do not want to go into the section with the CRT tube - dangerously high voltages lie within.

Of course, this is a pretty old machine, so if possible, I'd recommend that you just upgrade. Put the new HD into an external case, and get the cheapest current or nearly new iMac or iBook.

Thansk for the reply,

Yeah I know about the high voltages contained within... I can't currently afford a new machine, i'm saving for a ibook or a powerbook so if it isnt "too" expensive i want to try and fix the iMac

If you're looking for a cheapish replacement for your iMac, have a look at the 700mhz and up eMacs. eBay is a good place to look.
