So I just got my new mac mini (my first mac ever). I set everything up and turned up my resolution to 1024x768 (the highest it would go without giving me an "out of range" message. It worked fine for a couple of hours, then when I restarted it goes into the grey apple screen then the screen goes black and it says "out of range". Ifound the article of how to fix this on apple's website, but I can't get into safe mode or single user mode. I've tried pusing the shift key and the windows and s keys (i'm using a windows keyboard) at every different time I can think of, but nothing works. When EXACTLY are you supposed to hit shift (for safe mode) or windows-s (for single user mdoe) and when are you supposed to release them. I'm new to mac so thanks for your help.

Try shift-control-s. Or shift-alt-s.
If I recall correctly, the key mappings are swapped on "Windows" keyboards and "Apple" keyboards.

but when do I first push the keys and when do i release them? Is it after I first hear the tone or after the tone stops? Do I release them as soon as I see the white apple screen or after I see the progress indicator? I'm not having any luck.

A little googling says don't use the shift key. Experiment with different hold times for control-s, alt-s, and windows-s.

Found a post on apple.com forums of another guy with the same problem. Turns some windows keyboards can't be used to get into safe mode. I tried a different keyboard and it worked. Unfortunately I got into single user mode and did everything it said to do on apple's website to reset the resolution, but its still booting into a black "out of range" screen
