Is it possible to remove the 17" imac stand? I've been looking at the new 17" iMac and it looks to me like much of the weight is in the stand/base. I'm wondering, can the stand be removed to make the iMac more portable? Does anyone make a replacement or "mini or portable stand", like a propup thing, that you could use to take the iMac say from home to the office?

Seems like a good idea to me if it's possible.

It would be great if you were able to do it without breaking something. My new iMac 20" stand looks like you'd have to take the whole thing apart to get it off, and even then I'm not so sure. If you've ever seen the bottom of a surfboard where the skegs are attached it kinda looks like that. If you find out that it's doable and you can find a suitable no frills carry case for a 20" I'm down though.

The Rev. A and B iMac G5s, absolutely. It was quite easy with a No. 8 Torx screwdriver.

The new Rev. C iMacs, not so sure.

You can replace the stand with a VESA mount (Apple sells the adapter for $40ish).

I'm pretty sure the new imacs dont support the VESA mounts, meaning it might be more difficult to ge the stand off

Trust me, the weight is not in the base - it's made of aluminium.

The base only weighs a few pounds. The iMac is basically solid, there's almost no air inside. It's like a brick of plastic, silicon and metal.

It's heavy.
