I bought an Imac G5 today (last years model). I also was given the option of this new Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger", and was told it would make the computer better. I told them yes, but when i got home and looked at it on the apple site, i realised that I probably wont need widgets and all that other mumbo jumbo. My question: Do i need this new Tiger thing to make it work, and can i get by without it? (It already has an OS on it, a version below i believe.) I need to know right away so I can call them and tell them to not add it...
Thanks a bunch

I didn't own a Mac until June - so the only version I've ever known is Tiger. I
The model you're purchasing - does it have 256MB or 512MB of RAM preinstalled? What is the processor speed and screen size? If it has 512MB of RAM from the get-go, it should have Tiger preinstalled.
Regardless, I'd get it.
I love Spotlight (so fast!) and like you, I never thought I'd use widgets - but now I can't imagine a day WITHOUT them. My favorite widget? pearLyrics - it looks up the lyrics for the song currently playing in iTunes, AND adds them to song... so when I eventually load it on my 5G iPod, the lyrics will be there at my disposal. No muss, no fuss. Plus, I don't have to search for the lyrics on Google and go to the typical lyric sites that are littered with thousands of ugly advertisements. Anyway.. you'd be surprised how handy some of them are.
If I'm correct, Tiger was optimized for the G5 processor - so you'll probably notice an increase in speed with it.

Ok, it is an imac G5, 1.8ghz, 768MB ram, 20' screen. In the store, it was only 256MB of ram, but i had it upgraded with 512 more. Im just wondering though if il really need it, but if you say its faster, then i may as well go for it.

No, you don't need Tiger to make your iMac work. The previous release (Panther) will work fine.
What are they charging you, if anything, for the upgrade? You can always buy it later for $129.

I just bought my first Mac in August. Yes, it came with Tiger so I have no opinion of previous OS's. I love my Mac and one of the features / applications that I use all of the time are my favorite widgets. Yes, it depends on what you do with your machine, but even if you only use a couple of Widgets, the upgrade may be worth it. I track my stock portfolio (although limited), watch doppler radar for weather, look up words on the dictionary, keep up with the news and jot down memos to myself. All stuff I do often.
Worth a look.
