blown firewire port

I'm the proud owner of a 2x2 G5 Powermac, one that now has an inoperable firewire 400 port on the back of the machine.
It got this way courtesy of a power amp - I use this machine for music - that shorted out my entire apartment. In the process of self destructing, it wrecked a Motu 828 firewire card that the good folks at Motu say will take over a month to be repaired. And the power surge seems to have taken the firewire port on the computer too, although the front one still works and I don't have anything available to test the firewire 800 port.
My question is relatively simple. I'm going to be keeping this machine for a long time. Is it worth taking the machine in to get the port repaired, or would it be cheaper and easier to just get a PCI firewire card? None of the slots are being used and I have no plans to use them, so losing a slot is no big deal.
Any thoughts on this matter are appreciated.

A blown on-board firewire port's going to require a new logic board which is expensive. If you're still under warranty, I'd open a case with Apple for repair.
Just don't say anything about why you think it shorted and it's likely they'll fix it under warranty.

If you're under warranty, take it in and get the logic board swapped. If you're not, it will cost a small fortune to get the port fixed and you're better off with a PCI card.

I'd say just get a firewire PCI card.
But if you do decide to take it to Apple, make sure there are no obvious signs of shorts/burning inside the machine. If you're going to be dishonest, might as well do it in style

Well, there aren't any signs of singing, but the box is out of warranty, so it looks like a PCI firewire card is in my future. Thank god the port on the front of the computer still works. Any recommendations for the PCI slot?

Never experienced a power amp giving up the ghost in a studio
situation although I was nearby when one decides to give up the
ghost in a live setting. Unforgettable.
I would think homeowners insurance would cover this somehow.
