Hey guys,

Currently, I've got a 1 Ghz 15" PB (768 MB, 60gig) that's being used pretty much as a desktop machine (sadly, I was required to get a PC laptop for school so the PB now lives at home).

Given the cheap refurb. prices Apple has been offering, I was considering the switch to an iMac G5 in the $1,000 range. I figure I can get close to that for my PB and make pretty much a lateral switch.

Two questions for you pros:

1. Do you think my estimates of being able to make a more or less even switch are reasonable? (i.e. do you think I could make the switch for a net cost less than 100-150?)

2. Do you think I would notice much of a speed bump?

Thanks!

I have a 1.5 gHz PB and a 2.0 gHz iMac. The iMac is *much* faster than the PB. And the video is much better, too.

Can't help you with the finance part.

I bought a reurb 20" 2.0 GHz G5 for 1300 and recently ebayed my 1.0 GHz TiBook (1 gig RAM) for ~ 1100.

The iMac w/ 512 RAM is unbelievably faster than my TiBook was and I've since upped the RAM to 2 gigs.

I'm glad I went with the 20" over the 17" as I would have regretted not having the extra real estate for PS and a few other apps.

Newbie here, so go easy on me.

How can you do PS on an iMac? I didn't think it was possible to have any external input (TV, PS2, etc).

If you CAN do this - how is it done? I'd love to have a little TV ability in my iMac.

I think he meant Photoshop, not Playstation.
You can get TV in with a Firewire or USB TV tuner (elgato is a popular brand). They work great for watching TV, but the lag they add makes playing games from a PS2 difficult at best.
