So my school sent their single 1.8 in for repair, as Apple said they had to try and repair it 3 times before they would consider replacing it (it had the problem all the other late 2004s had, though as it turns out, it is now fixed due to the recent firmware update). When the mac arrived back to us, all seemed the same, except for the outer casing being a bit broken. We decided not to have a rant at apple about it, as we didnt want to be without it again.

So today I was messing around in system profiler, and discovered that the video card is an ATI 9600XT (128mb). The thing is, before it was sent to be fixed, it had a 64mb NVidia card in it. I dont know if it IS actually a Radeon 9600XT though, because the outputs are 1xDVI and 1xADC (dont know what the card is supposed to have?), and the actual card is blue, and I thought Radeons were red.

Also, the optical drive used to be the old 8x superdrive that burned only DVD-R, but now system profiler is saying that it will burn DVD+/-R/RW, though no comment on dual layer or speed.

Just thought it was a little weird, im starting to think the machine wasn't infact the 1 we sent back? Im not complaining, as the one we have seems to be better!

A bit curious on the graphics card though, wondered if anyone could shed any light on what ports it should have etc

You could always check the serial number for the machine and match it up. There is a serial number on the casing when you take the side cover off. Also, it should be listed in the system profiler.

As for the video card, I am thinking that it has 2 DVI ports but I could be wrong. The 9600XT that I have is red if that makes a difference.

Weird. It's almost like you received a better machine than the one you sent in in the
first place. Definetely check the serial number. Someone might be getting a 1.8 back
that doesn't have what they sent it in with!

The 9600 I have in my PowerMac is blue, but the PCB color really doesn't determine which video card it is.

If you go to "About this Mac" and then click on the text "Version 10.4.3" a couple times it'll tell you the serial number of the machine.

Well i checked the serial with the original serial tht was on the documentation I had, and also with what the sotware said, and they all matched up, so it seems somehow, and for some reason, they upped my graphics card and optical drive!

Maybe they determined those components were defective. Too bad about the case damage - something like that would really bother me.

In many cases the Apple Store will replace your components with better components if the original parts will take too long to get, as a customer service.

This is the case with yours. Cool deal for you. Glad to hear they finally got your machine back to you.

my 9600 XT has the DVI and the ADC port.
Don't regret the video card

Once, I sent a mp3 reader to be replaced and when I went to pick it up, and after they said it was replaced by a brand new, I discovered they gave me the old one... (needless to say that I made them replace it )
