I'm running 2 120GB drives mirrored (RAID 1), and have received a message in the past that reads "disk is unreadable, ignore, initialize, eject" or something. However, after opening the case and securing the cables, it was fine.

This week i got the same error, then again, after unplugging and replugging the drive the error is gone, but the array says "Degraded." So I tried wiping the questionable drive and re-adding it to the array as a replacement drive. The rebuild process never finishes. No error. No message. I come back to look at it about an hour later and the drive is just sitting there in disk utility. Scans report it is 'OK.'

The RAID was originally set up with disk utility under 10.2, now I am running 10.3.9. Needless to say, I don't have an extra 120GB drive lying around and wanted some kind of confirmation that the existing drive was bad before dropping $70 or so on a new one only to run into the same problem.

Am I doing something wrong making it incapable of adding the 2nd drive back to the array? Is there some other way to confirm a bad drive?

Don't know - and the machine isn't in front of me right now so i'll have to check when I get home tonight.

I did just read in the reviews for SoftRAID that someone was having this identical problem with an array created with Disk Utility which cleared up after using softraid. However, Disk Utility creates bootable arrays, SoftRAID does not.

Since I have a 300GB 3rd drive which I'm currently booting from to work on the array, I have everything backed up via Carbon Copy Cloner on a disk image. I may try blasting all the data, rebuilding the array, then copying from the backup. PITA, but might be my only option at this point since Disk Utility is uncooperative.

I booted up from the drives when I got home and they said "Rebuilding" for a long time in Disk Utility. I did not tell it to do anything so I guess it was just doing that on its own. After quitting and starting DU again, now it just says Degraded. Nothing I do seems to make a bit of fracking difference and this array is always going to be "Degraded." Awesome.

Seriously, that's all I've got. All I can think to do now is delete the whole thing and start over. So would someone chime in here and tell me if Disk Utility is even worth the disk space it occupies? So far it has been utterly useless.
