just bought a sony dvd 16x internal double layer dual format burner for $39.99 model dru800a. will this work with my g4 733 and os x 10.4

It will work but will probably require Patchburn 4 to be recognized.

For iTunes, iMove, iDVD and the other built in burning apps you will need patchburn for the burner to be used. But you should also get toast. It is a far more comprehensive program for burning DVDs.

And if I were you I would skip the Sony DVD burner and go the NEC 3550A. It is about the same price, maybe a buck or two cheaper if you look hard enough, and it is a far more popular drive because of its performance.

Yep I have one in my G5 now and no problems (I only needed patchburn for iDVD.)
