on the ibooks i own you can dim the screen with the f keys and even turn the screen off. But now that i got an imac (isight) well i miss that feature. Can you even dim the screen on desktops?

The fuction keys F14 will dim the screen, and F15 will brighten the sceen. Though on my Rev. B iMac G5 it doesn't totally turn the screen off.
