I have a G4 dual 1Ghz processors mac with two internal hard drives equalling 150GB. I have had it for about 3 years now and am thinking of getting something new. I really only use it for internet, music, pictures and games. I was thinking of replacing it with a Mac Mini. I would definately get the high end model and I would opt for the stackable external hard drive (giving it roughly the same amount of memory that my G4 has now). Will I regret this move or do you think that the new Mini will satisfy my needs. Will one be faster than the other? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!

What video card do you have now? The mini's anemic graphics performance is the only thing that I can think of that could disappoint you.

GeForce4 Ti 4600. Is that better or worse than the Mini's?

your "upgrade" would be a pretty big step down. Stick with the dual 1.0 until Macworld and see what materializes from the intel mac mini rumors.

Indeed.

You'd be stepping down in graphics performance, storage speed and processor power.

Why?

Ditto what everyone else is saying. The GeForce4 Ti4600 you have now is much better. In my opinion, dual 1GHz is far better than single 1.5GHz. I don't know how fast your current drives are, but even if they are slow, plugging in a faster drive is much simpler and cheaper with your tower.

I have played with Minis at the Apple Store. My Dual 1.0 is still definitely more teh snappy. I would keep your current machine until you can move into a faster dual-cpu machine, or you will seriously notice the difference.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I will keep what I have for now. I just really wasn't sure how the Mini stacked up against my tower.

Perhaps you should consider upgrading to a faster dual processor cpu?

You paid how much for your Power Mac and you're wondering if a mini is going to out perform it. The mini is a computer designed with people like my mom in mind. Seriously it's a nice machine but going from a dual proc setup to the mini is a lil silly. Though for the money you were thinking of throwing at a mini you could see about getting a Upgrade card for your Power Mac.

And offset some of the cost of it by selling the original Dual GHz card on eBay.
