I have not noticed any threads mentioning this feature of the new iMac's. If you move your mouse or hit any key on keyboard and then do nothing else, in approximately 1 minute you will see he screen dim just a little. I assume this is just a screen saving function. As soon as you hit a key or move your mouse after the slight dim the screen returns to normal brightness.

This is standard Mac behavior with built-in LCDs. It's part of the energy saver feature. The screen automatically dims in half the sleep time. For example, if you have your machine set to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, the screen will dim after 5 minutes, etc.

Thank you for your comment, that is a neat feature of the built in LCD screen, at the moment I have my setting for the screen to go to sleep at 5 minutes, so in the time frame of approximately 1 minute the screen dims just slightly.

I think a lot of us wish the dimming was controllable, but unfortunately it's not. It happens in half the sleep time by design.

There is an option in the Energy Saver prefs (the second tab) to enable or disable this feature. I know a lot of people say that the option doesn't work for them though.

I was sure that the 'help/tool-tip' text that appears when you hover the pointer over the Display Sleep slider control in Energy Saver prefs used to say "Dims xx mins. Sleep xx mins".

I just checked and as of 10.4.3 it no longer gives the time for dimming, only for sleep.

Strange… i wonder why Apple removed this?

Does anyone else remember this, or am I imagining it?
